  1. Hi I’ve been trying to figure out my exact coloring for a while now, I’ve narrowed It down to deep autumn or deep winter but chances are I could be anything else as well. I’m East Asian. From photos, as a kid I had light skin with a peach/pink/red undertone, black-brown eyes, and black hair (w/o any hints of brown). I’m 19 now and my coloring has lightened to ashier black hair and dark brown eyes. I’ve tanned easily without burning since I was a kid, I stay around light-medium during the winter and medium-tan during the summer. I’m not too certain about my undertone because I struggle with cystic acne on my cheeks and chin so there’s surface redness from scarring but my forehead isn’t acne prone and there’s a slight peach/pink/red undertones present as well. I’m somewhere between medium and high contrast. My best colors for clothing are greens (preferably olive), blues (cooler shades), and grays (heather) – preferably something not saturated or too muted. As far as I know, I get washed out by icy purples, dusty pinks, light cool browns and overpowered by cobalt. Pure white or black clothing usually evens out my skin.

  2. Hi Agnes,

It’s Mandy again, something else I forgot to mention is that I tan pretty well but do burn too. Example: I was in Florida for a week in April (originally from the Midwest) and I spent one day out in the Florida sun without a shawl and got pretty tan. However, after that week I noticed burns all over my back and arms..I was in pain for quite a while. So yes, both tan and burn.. hope that gives you extra helps in determining what I am!

    Thank you!

    1. Hello Mandy,
Based on your description, yes, you can be a Cool Winter. Every seasonal palette can have freckles; Springs and Autumns have brownish colored freckles, while Summers and Winters can have taupe or grayish ones.
Also, there are similarities between the Deep Winter and the Shaded Soft Summer seasonal color palette, so I recommend checking out that blog post too.
If light and icy colors suit you or shiny, silk-like fabrics make your face bright, you could be a Cool Winter. Try on these shades, so you can see which is more flattering: deep taupe (Deep W-DW) vs. charcoal gray (Cool Winter-CW), deep magenta (DW) vs. fuchsia (CW), or true red (DW) vs. cherry red (CW). You can try the two red shades as lipsticks too.

      1. Great, thank you Agnes! Charcoal gray looks way better one me than deep taupe and cherry red does wonders so I think I definitely am a Cool Winter. Thanks again for the feedback! 🙂 🙂

  3. Hello Agnes,

My name is Mandy and I am just wondering about my coloring. I am 99.9% sure that I am a deep winter but sometimes I wonder if I am bordering on cool winter since I have freckles. I have a cool olive skin tone with toffee brown eyes. My hair is brown with no red tones although it can get blonde tips if in the summer sun… I have asked my hair stylist before what level she thinks I am at and she said anywhere from a 4-5. What do you think I am? A deep winter or a cool winter or something else entirely? I also looked at my veins and I have mostly blue veins with about 2 small greenish-blue veins..if that makes sense.. Hope my description is not too confusing. Looking forward to your feedback! 🙂

  4. Wondering what season Michelle Dockery may be? I am very similar to her coloring. Also, are reddish brown or rusty brown eyes warm or cool. Love your blog!

    1. Hello Brittany,
I’m happy that you like my blog. 🙂
Michelle Dockery is in my Clear Winter examples; maybe her eyes are brighter than a Deep Winter lady has.
If the rusty or reddish-brown eyes are lighter, they could fit to the Clear Winter category; if they are darker, Deep Winters can have them. However, the color of the eyes is only one aspect of deciding your seasonal color palette. 🙂

  5. I think I’m between a deep winter and deep autumn. I have lots of freckles on my face, but I tan well with sunscreen (if that makes sense) but then the rest of me is fair. My eyes are hazel. My hair has some gray now but was deep brown/black with some auburn highlights. What throws me off are my freckles, I don’t wear any kind of makeup other than eyeliner and mascara, so I suppose my skin tone is uneven. When I look at pics of examples of people with deep winter coloring I don’t see freckles, yet I don’t think my skin is olive enough for deep autumn. So I guess I’m in between.

    1. Hi Susanna,
You can be a Deep Winter with freckles that indicates you have some warmth in your coloring. Deep Winters are Winters that flow to Autumn, which is a warm seasonal palette. Try on these shades, so you can see which is more flattering: black (Deep W-DW) vs. classic brown (Deep Au-DAu), pine green (DW) vs. olive green (DAu), or true red (DW) vs. rusty red (DAu). You can try the two red shades as lipsticks too.

  6. hey, can a true summer have dark brown eyes ? i don’t really know what season am i. see, i’m pale with dark eyes and ash brown hair. honestly, i prefer myself in ashy muted colors than using strong and bright colors like the “dark winter” pallete. help ):

    1. Hello,
Shaded Soft Summers could have brown eyes. Sometimes I have clients with deeper brown eyes as well.
The Shaded Soft Summer palette is similar to the Deep Winter, but the colors are more muted. Check it out. 🙂

    2. Hi,
In my opinion, Cool/True Summers can only have grayish-blue or green, or moderately bright blue or green eyes, not brown. Cool/True Winters can have grayish-brown eyes, as well as Shaded Soft Summers.

  7. I don’t think the most Asian women would be analysesd in deep winter because each girl in Asia have each black with her hair and eyes (for instance I have ash blak
hair but my sister has black brown) although white women don’t know the differences like we can’t notice their differences of whites’ skin.
I really am interested in personal seasons analysis since I was little,I’ve learnt a lot and I’ve analysed many friends of mine, the fact is most Japanese are in spring and summer.
    Probably

    1. Hello Lily,
Thank you for your insight. I agree; there could be Asian ladies with Clear or Cool Winter seasonal color palettes. I think to be classified as a Spring or a Summer, you should have lighter characteristics because these are the light seasons.
If you have one of the deeper hair colors like brown, black-brown, or black and deeper eye color, you can’t be a Spring logically, maybe a Shaded Soft Summer. Based on my knowledge and practice, Winters can wear bright and clear colors so they can get away using some colors from the Spring palettes like coral, but overall, the light and warm shades won’t go well with their deeper overall look.

      1. I respectfully disagree. The way I’ve learned and gone about color theory, especially with POCs, you fit the characteristics with respect to your ethnicity/race. With this, I think a POC can be one of the lighter seasons if they have light features with respect to their ethnicity and/or race. Ex. Zoe Saldana as a Soft Summer, Lupita N’yongo as a Bright Winter, etc. And all in all, what matters most is how you look in the colors via draping. In my opinion, it would be borderline ignorant to pidgeon-hold POCs to the “dark” seasons.

    2. I am indian and analysed as deep
Winter .. though am fair and have Asian brown eyes and hair so I guess just try the colours the app
Suggests and see the reaction and not analyse too much?

  8. I feel I am winter until we get to jewellery
Rose gold looks like copper on me and whilst white metals look good, yellow gold is good too and what I mostly wear…
Not sure if I have it all wrong on that one??

  9. I don't think it's an exact science. I for example, an a Deep Autumn/Deep Winter. I have very fair skin, warm brown eyes and dark chestnut auburn hair. I have a neutral skin tone with cool elements (never tan). So you can be a mix. I think Rose is a mix too.

  10. Rose Byrne has a definite golden tone to her hair. Do you think it clashes with her deep winter coloring? Also, you wrote deep winter style is dramatic and natural, but what about romantic kibbe type?

    1. I am deep winter but with a light olive undertone. So pastels like lavender is a no for me. Its hard to pick colours from the deep winter palette, neutral and warm because some colors either make me look sickly, yellow or ashy. I always get categorise towards “warm tone” as ppl often don’t think to consider light olive tone ppl which can go either cool, warm or neutral :/ it’s frustrating!
